Hydrants & Flushing
The CBRM Water Utility maintains fire hydrants throughout the municipality to provide both fire protection and a way to flush the water system. Hydrants are a key part of keeping your drinking water safe and the distribution system functioning properly.
To protect the system and public safety, unauthorized use of a hydrant is not allowed. Drawing water from a hydrant without permission can damage the infrastructure and affect water service, including during emergencies.
Hydrant Flushing
The Utility flushes the distribution system twice a year, in spring and fall, to maintain water quality and proper flow. During flushing, you may notice low water pressure and/or temporary discolouration.
This is normal, and the water remains safe to use. You should check your water before doing laundry, especially white clothing, while flushing is happening.
Bulk Water
Bulk water is available from the Public Works building (15 Massey Drive, Sydney).
Contractors or residents who need access for hydrants or bulk water should contact their local Public Works Division.
