Civic Address
Civic numbers are generally only assigned to structures. When building a house, a civic number will be assigned as part of the permit process.
For new buildings, when the Planning Department receives your Location Certificate (a step in the building permit process), you will be contacted with your new address.
If you are placing an RV on your property and it includes a physical structure, such as a power-connection shed, you may request a civic address as part of the required Development Permit.
For more information, contact the Civic Addressing Coordinator at 902-563-5075.
You can purchase a reflective blue civic address sign for your home or business from the Citizen Service Centre at City Hall (320 Esplanade, Sydney). Orders are placed monthly.
Pricing:
- $25.75 plus tax for two-sided
- $21.75 plus tax for one-sided
Canada Post is responsible for postal codes. Visit your local post office or find a postal code online.
If your address is not showing up when you try to enter it online, it is usually because it has not yet been added to Canada Post’s system.
For new houses or newly assigned addresses
Once your home has passed its final inspection and you have received your Occupancy Permit, take a copy of the permit to a local Canada Post office. Canada Post will add your address to its system and assign a postal code. Once this is done, your address should appear on most websites that use automatic address lookup tools.
Please note that mapping services such as Google Maps and Apple Maps manage their own address databases. These services update on their own timelines.
For an established house or address
